Risk factors for depression

                               Risk factors for depression

Postpartum Depression is a state of sadness that about five percent of women experiences after the birth of a child and there are risked factors associated with it. Sometimes, medication is given to help to control it.

Some of the risk factors are:

Previous Postpartum Depression
If she was faced with this before, it is highly possible that she can be faced with it again, but it does not mean that she will get it again. It will be a good idea for her to keep away from the things that contributed to her developing it previously.

Lack of Support
Throughout the pregnancy, a woman needs the support of family and friends and she needs it after the birth of the child as well. Usually, immediately after the birth of the baby many family members and friends will visit the new mother, but by the time the baby is one month old, you can hardly find anyone visiting.

All new mothers need ongoing support and it can be in the form of a meal once a week, to dropping off and picking up an older child from school. These things can help to ease her mind and thereby prevent her from thinking that she is all alone.

Family History
If there is a family history of it, it is also possible that a new mother can develop it. However, it must be pointed out that although it is possible that she can develop it, it does not mean that she will get it. Care should be taken to keep away from those things that can contribute to it.

History of Depression, Panic Attacks
Diagnose depression and panic attacks not associated with pregnancy can be a step closer to postpartum.
